    History

-Volleyball started in 1895 by William C. Morgan for the YMCA.

-It is an Olympic sport and can be played by people of all ages.

-Volleyball can be played in the back yard, at the beach or in a gymnasium.

    Serving

-In class we will learn 2 types of serves.

    1. Underhand Serve

-hold the ball in the non-serving hand, hold it at waist level, contact the ball with the flat side of palm near the wrist area.

-Transfer weight from back leg to front leg as you serve the ball.

    2. Overhand / Overhead Serve

-This is a harder skill because you are hitting a moving target.

-The key to a good overhand serve is the Toss.

-Toss the ball in the air high just above the serving hand that is stretched out.  Contact the ball high and with an open palm, follow through down with arm.

-Transfer weight from back leg to front leg as you serve the ball.

When a ball hits the net on a serve and goes over it is

    known as a LET serve.

    Bump/ Forearm Pass:

This skill is used when the ball is coming at you

and it is below your shoulders.

Do not swing your arms higher than your eyes.

Use your legs to move the ball.

    Set:

This skill is used when the ball is coming at you

and it is above your shoulders.

You use your finger tips when setting the ball.

    Scoring

We will be using Rally Scoring in all of our games.

For every serve, one team or the other will earn a point.  The point and the serve will be awarded to the team which does not make the error.

Games will be played to 25 and you must win by 2.

When a ball lands on a line it is considered IN.

    Rotation

Students will review rotation before each game is played.
