# Chapter 3 Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Chapter Objective:

* Add and subtract unlike fractions and mixed numbers by rewriting them with like denominators.

Vocabulary:

Multiple - The product of two whole numbers. Ex: 2 X 4 = 8. 8 is a multiple of 2 and of 4.

Least common multiple (LCM) - The least common number among all the common multiples of a set of two or more numbers. Ex: Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12... Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, ... The LCM of 3 and 4 is 12.

Least common denominator (LCD) - The least common multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions. Ex: The LCD of 2/3 and 3/4 is 12.

Equivalent fractions - Fractions that represent the same quantity or value. Ex: 1/2, 2/4 and 3/6 are equivalent fractions.

Benchmarks - Numbers which are easier to work with and to picture than others. Common benchmarks for estimating with fractions are 0, 1/2 and 1.

Division Expression - An expression that contains only numbers and the division symbol.

Mixed number - A number that is made up with a whole number and a fraction.  Ex: 2  1/4.
